Swimming Lessons

Sanford Swim Lessons are perfect for swimmers 6 months old to adults. Learning to swim can be fun and foster a child’s life-long love for the water.  Learn about our different levels and what level would be good to get started in below. Schedules and dates are updated regularly, so check back to find information on upcoming sessions.

Level Descriptions

Parent & Child Level 1

Age: 6-18 months

Description: First interaction with the water. They learn about blowing bubbles, breath control, floats and kicking on both front and back. This parent/child class allows students and parents to learn about safe ways to introduce children to the water. This class is mainly to start getting the children comfortable with being in the water. Children will not learn how to swim independently in this class.  

Parent & Child Level 2

Age: 19-36 months

Description: In this class, the children continue to get comfortable with the water. The child plays games, while parents continue to learn how to keep their child safe in aquatic environments and how to get them comfortable in the water. Children learn about blowing bubbles, breath control, floats and kicking on both front and back. Children will not learn how to swim independently in this class.  

Parent & Child Level 3

Age: 3 years-old

Description: In this class, the students continue to get comfortable with the water. The child plays games, while parents continue to learn how to keep their child safe in aquatic environments and how to get them comfortable in the water. Children learn about blowing bubbles, breath control, floats and kicking on both front and back. Students start to build distance between parents and start to try things independently. This class is great for 3 year-olds that are still a little more hesitant in the water/who have not had a lot of exposure to the water. They DO NOT learn how to swim from this class.

Preschool Level 1

Ages: 3 years old

Description: This is the first class without mom and dad in the water with them. The child works on getting in the water independently/jumping to a teacher. They work on blowing bubbles and submerging their mouth. Instructors assist them with front float, back float, rolling from front to back, rolling from back to front. Children begin working on arm and leg actions while on their front/back. Instructors assist them with everything they do. Students cannot yet swim alone, but they do begin learning the movements.

Preschool Level 2

Age: 4-6 years-old

Description: Children will work on getting in the water independently. They work on blowing bubbles and submerging their mouth. They work on combined arm and leg actions on front/back, front glide, back glide, front float, back float, rolling from front to back, rolling from back to front. They work on bobbing (submerging under water completely) and treading. Students continue to work on arm/leg action on front and back. They should be able to swim independently at the end of this level with minimal assistance.

Preschool Level 3

Age: 4-6 years-old

Prerequisites: Children should be able to Front Crawl and Back Crawl with minimal assistance. Children must have passed Preschool level 2.

Description: This is the class that students become completely independent from the teachers assistance. In this level, children will continue to work on their front and back crawl. Children in this level will start to learn how to breathe to the side. By the end of this level students should be able to breathe to the side, tread water for 30 seconds, front/back glide, jellyfish float and tuck float all independently.

Level 1

Age: 6 years-old +

Description: This class is for the beginner swimmer who has not had lessons yet, but are too old for the preschool levels. This level child will learn their front/back floats, front and back strokes, and become more confident in the water. By the end of this level, children should be able to swim on their front and back independently. (Front crawl and back crawl)

Level 2

Age: 6 years-old +

Prerequisites: Front crawl, back crawl, treading water and floating independently.

Description: In this level, the children will continue to work on front crawl, back crawl. Children will learn rotary breathing during front crawl. They also work on all the different types of floats, and when to use them. They work on safety skills and recovering from a back float/front float. They also work on transitioning from treading to swimming and vice versa. They work on front glides/back glides. This level is about independence, gain strength and using front crawl and back crawl as a base for level 3.

Level 3

Age: 6 years-old +

Prerequisites: Completion of American Red Cross Learn-to-swim level 2 OR successfully demonstration of all the skills completed from Level 2. Those skills include: front crawl, back crawl, treading water and floating independently Children should be able to swim 15 yards in each stroke, they should be able to rotary breathe.

Description: In this level, children continue to work on rotary breathing and mastering front crawl, back crawl. In this level students will learn the Elementary back stroke, scissors kick, dolphin kick, and the whip kick on their front. This level helps prepare them for Level 4, where they learn three new strokes. This level also builds their endurance for Level 4. Children at the Oxbow location also work on sitting/kneeling dives. At the end of this level, children should be able to front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and tread water for a minute.

Level 4

Age: 6 years-old +

Prerequisites: Completion of American Red Cross Learn-to-swim level 3 OR successfully demonstration of all the skills completed from Level 3 Those skills include: front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl and elementary backstroke extremely well. Children should also know how to do the dolphin and scissor kicks.

Description: : In this level, children will learn 3 different strokes. Children will learn their breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly stroke. They will also learn how to do an open turn on both their front and back. Children by the end of this level should be able to demonstrate treading water with two different kicks, be able to swim front, back and elementary back for 25 yards. Breaststroke butterfly and sidestrokes for 15 yards.

Level 5

Age: 6 years-old +

Prerequisites: : Completion of American Red Cross Learn-to-swim level 4 OR successfully demonstration of all the skills completed from Level 4. This includes swim at least 25 yards. Children should also be able to complete all the strokes well; front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly, sidestroke and breaststroke.

Description:: In this level, children do not learn any new strokes; they master the ones that they already learned. They swim laps, work on technique, on flip turns, shallow angle dives and surface dives. To successfully pass this level children must be able to front stroke/backstroke flip turn, tread water for 5 minutes, swim 50 yards in front, breast, and elementary back stroke, and 25 yards for the side, butterfly and back stroke.

Level 6 Fitness Swimmer

Age: 6 years-old +

** There are 3 components to Level 6, Personal Water Safety, Fitness Swimmer and Diving. The Sanford Wellness Center offers 2 out of the 3 components, they are Personal Water Safety, and Fitness Swimmer.

Prerequisites: Completion of American Red Cross Learn-to-swim level 5 OR successfully demonstration of all the skills completed from Level 5. Children should be able to complete all the strokes well; front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly, sidestroke and breaststroke. Students should know how to do flip turns, surface dives, treading, floating, etc.

Description:: In this level, children do not learn any new strokes, but continue learning how to coordinate and refine their strokes. At the end of all level 6 classes offered children are expected to swim 500 yards without stopping and be able to tread water for 5 minutes, and 2 minutes without hands.

Level 6 Personal Water Safety

Age: 6 years-old +

Adult Swim Lessons

Age: 14 years-old +

Description: These lessons are for adults that would like to work on their swimming form and skills. It is for any adults from the beginner to the adult that wants to work on technique. The instructor works with each adult to help him or her achieve their individual goals.

Strength & Stroke

Prerequisites: Students must be able to swim 25 yards and completed Red Cross Level 4 at least once.

This class works on improving stroke technique and endurance to help improve efficiency in the water.

The stokes focused on in this class include; front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary back stroke, side stroke and butterfly.
