Sanford Swim Lessons are perfect for swimmers 6 months old to adults. Learning to swim can be fun and foster a child’s life-long love for the water.  Learn about our different levels and what level would be good to get started in below. Level Descriptions

Parent & Child Level 1

Age: 6 - 18months

Description: First interaction with the water. They will learn about blowing bubbles, breath control, floats and kicking on both front and back. This parent child class will allow students and parents to learn about safe ways to introduce their children to the water. This class is mainly to start getting the children comfortable with being in the water. They will NOT learn how to swim from this class.

Parent & Child Level 2

Age: 19 - 36 months

Description: This class the students are still learning to get comfortable with the water. The child will play games and parents will continue to learn how to keep their child safe around aquatic environments and how to get them to be comfortable in the water. They will learn about blowing bubbles, breath control, floats and kicking on both front and back. They will NOT learn how to swim from this class.

Parent & Child Level 3

Age: 3 years old

Description: This class the students are still learning to get comfortable with the water. The child will play games and parents will continue to learn how to keep their child safe around aquatic environments and how to get them to be comfortable in the water. They will learn about blowing bubbles, breath control, floats and kicking on both front and back. Students will start to build distance between parents and will start to try things independently. This class is great for 3 year olds that are still a little more hesitant in the water/who have not had a lot of exposure to the water. They will NOT learn how to swim from this class.

Preschool Level 1

Ages: 3-6

Description: This is the first class without mom and dad in the water with them. The student will work on getting in the water independently/jumping to a teacher. They will work on blowing bubbles and submerging their mouth. They will be assisted with the following: front glide, back glide, front float, back float, rolling from front to back, rolling from back to front. They will begin working on arm and let simultaneous action while on their front/back. They will be assisted for everything they do. They will not be able to swim alone, but they will begin learning the movements.

Preschool Level 2

Age: 4-6 year olds

Description: The student will work on getting in the water independently/ jumping to a teacher. They will work on blowing bubbles and submerging their mouth. They will work on the following: Combined arm and leg actions on front/back, front glide, back glide, Front float, Back Float, rolling from front to back, rolling from back to front. They will work on: bobbing (submerging under water completely) and treading. Students will continue to work on arm/ leg action on front & back. They should be able to swim independently at the end of this level.

Preschool Level 3

Age: 4-6 years

Pre Requisites: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Treading & Floating

Description: This is the class that students become completely independent from the teachers assistance. The students will learn to front float/back float, jelly fish float, tuck float, INDEPENDENTLY. Students will also learn to glide on their front and back independently, tread water for 30 seconds independently, they will also be able to perform simultaneous arm and leg action on their front and back independently( Front Crawl, Back crawl, Elementary back stroke).

Level 1

Age: 6years+

Pre Requisites: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Treading & Floating

Description: This class is for older students who may not have the skills for Level 2 but are older than children in the preschool levels. Students will become completely independent from the teachers assistance. The students will learn to front float/back float, jelly fish float, tuck float, INDEPENDENTLY. Students will also learn to glide on their front and back independently, tread water, they will also be able to perform simultaneous & combined arm and leg actions on their front and back independently (Front Crawl, Back crawl, Elementary back stroke).

Level 2

Age: 6years+

Pre Requisites: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Treading & Floating INDEPENDENTLY

Description: In this level the students will work on Front Crawl, Back Crawl & Elementary Backstroke. Students will work on rotary breathing during front crawl. They will also work on all the different types of floats and when to use them. They will work on safety skills and recovering from a back float/ front float. They will also work on transitioning from treading to swimming and vice versa. They will work on front glides/ back glides. This level is about independence, gain strength and using front crawl and back crawl as a base for level 3.

Level 3

Age: 6years+

Pre Requisites: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Treading & Floating INDEPENDENTLY. They should be able to swim 15 yards in each stroke, they should be able to rotary breathe.

Description: In this level students will continue to work on rotary breathing and mastering front crawl, back crawl & Elementary Backstroke. Students will learn side stroke kick (scissor kick), Butterfly kick (which they should already know about), and the breast stroke kick (whip kick). This level is to help prepare them for level 4 where they learn 3 new strokes. This level also builds their endurance for Level 4. Students at the Oxbow location will work on sitting/kneeling dives.

Level 4

Age: 6years+

Pre Requisites: Students should be able to complete Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke Extremely well, should be able to rotary breathing completely. Students should know how to do the dolphin and scissor kick, and Butterfly arms/Sidestroke Arms somewhat.

Description: In this level they will learn a feet first surface dive, and dives from the side (at the Oxbow Location only). Students will learn how to do an open turn on their front and on their back. They will need to demonstrate how to tread using 2 different methods. They will learn breaststroke, butterfly and sidestroke. They will continue to master/practice elementary backstroke, back crawl and front crawl. The main part of this level is to teach students breaststroke, butterfly and sidestroke. They will also be building their endurance by swimming laps.

Level 5

Age: 6years+

Pre Requisites: Students must be able to swim at least 25 yards. Students should be able to complete all the strokes well; Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Butterfly, Sidestroke & Breaststroke. Students should know how to do flip turns, surface dives, treading, floating, etc.

Description: In this level they are not learning any new strokes; they will be mastering the ones that they have. They will be swimming laps and working on technique. They will work on flip turns, shallow angle dives and surface dives.

Level 6 Fitness Swimmer

Age: 6years+

*In all Level 6 classes students will swim 500 yards nonstop, tread water for 5 minutes with hands and 2 minutes without.

Pre Reqs.: Students should be able to complete all the strokes well; Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Butterfly, Sidestroke & Breaststroke. Students should know how to do flip turns, surface dives, treading, floating, etc.

Description: In this level they are not learning any new strokes; they will be mastering the ones that they have. They will be swimming laps and working on technique. This level is designed to help children become more fit during swimming; they will be swimming laps mainly and doing workouts.

Level 6 Personal Water Safety

Age: 6years+

*In all Level 6 classes students will swim 500 yards nonstop, tread water for 5 minutes with hands and 2 minutes without.

Pre Requisites: Students should be able to complete all the strokes well; Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Butterfly, Sidestroke & Breaststroke. Students should know how to do flip turns, surface dives, treading, floating, etc.

Description: In this level they are not learning any new strokes; they will be mastering the ones that they have. They will be swimming laps and working on technique. This level is designed to help students know how to stay safe around aquatic environments and gives them the key techniques they need to save themselves/others in the event of an emergency.

Adult Swim Lessons

Age: 13 years +

Description: These lessons are for adults that would like to work on their swimming form and skills. It is for any adults from the beginner to the adult that wants to work on technique. The instructor will work with each adult to help them achieve their individual goals.

Strength & Stroke

Pre Requisites: must be able to swim 25 yards and have taken Red Cross level 4 at least once.

This class will work on improving stroke technique and endurance, to help improve their efficiency in the water.

The stokes focused on in this class are Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Back Stroke, Side Stroke, and Butterfly.
