Multidisciplinary team approach at Sanford Cancer Center

At Sanford Cancer Center in Sioux Falls we focus on a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer, which provides patients with comprehensive cancer treatment. We realize that not all cancers are the same, which is why our providers focus on different types of cancer. Medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and others all collaborate together to identify effective treatment tools and methods for all types of cancers.

Tumor board

The team at Sanford Cancer Center is dedicated to finding the best care for each individual. That is why patient cases are presented and discussed at an interdisciplinary tumor board. The tumor board is comprised of experts from all aspects of cancer care. There can be as many as 12 doctors from various disciplines involved in these meetings including:

  • Medical oncologist who provides treatment through medicine
  • Surgical oncologist who provides treatment through surgery
  • Radiation oncologist who provides treatment through radiation
Together, this group of experts reviews and discusses complex cases of patients who have previously received treatment and are now in need of something else. Their goal is to develop and then decide on the best path to move forward with.

Sanford Cancer Center offers interdisciplinary tumor boards for the following cancer types:

  • Lung
  • Breast
  • Gastrointestinal and Genitourinary
  • Head and neck
  • Gynecologic
  • Hematologic (blood)
  • Genomic for all cancer types
Because the standard of care is always evolving, the Sanford Cancer team is the best resource in providing information about the latest treatments, care plans, research studies and clinical trials. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call (605) 328-8000.
