Direct access testing at Sanford Health gives you the freedom to order lab tests quickly and confidentially without having to visit a health care provider. Our trained team will perform the tests at an accredited Sanford Laboratories location.

This convenient and cost-effective lab testing option helps individuals monitor certain ongoing health risks, provide personal health data, or test for potential future health risks.  

These tests should not be used as a substitute for regular health care visits. If you receive an abnormal test result, please contact your primary care provider.

Payment options

Payment is required at the time of service and insurance will not be billed. We accept all major credit cards. We cannot accept cash or checks for these services.

Testing Offered 

All of our direct access testing laboratory locations offer a variety of tests to help you understand your health, including, but not limited to:

  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP): Consists of 14 individual tests that look at blood sugar, liver and kidney levels.
  • Complete blood count (CBC): Helps diagnose anemia, certain cancers of the blood and inflammatory diseases.
  • Hemoglobin A1C: Provides a three-month average of blood sugar levels. This test can be used to diagnose diabetes and determine how well it is being managed.
  • Lipid panel: Used for monitoring cardiovascular health and includes Total Cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol) and triglycerides.
  • Thyroid-Stimulation Hormone (TSH): Monitors thyroid function, which controls metabolism. Irregular thyroid function can explain an array of symptoms that are often treated with thyroid medications.
  • Vitamin levels: Vitamin deficiencies can cause multiple symptoms, such as fatigue, hair loss and dry skin. Knowing your baseline allows you to adjust your diet or consider supplementation.
    • Vitamin testing such as Vitamin B12 or Vitamin D are performed to identify the level of micronutrients in the blood which can affect your overall health. 

Direct Access Testing FAQ

Will a direct access test be billed to my insurance?

No, these lab tests are not billed to insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. Payment by credit card is required upfront when you order your laboratory test.

How will I receive my results?

Results can be found in My Sanford Chart. If you are not enrolled in My Sanford Chart, mailed results are available. For any critical result(s), you will receive a phone call. 

Who do I contact if I have concerns about my results?

Please discuss any concerns regarding your test results with your primary care provider. 

What do I need to do prior to coming in for a direct access test? Should I schedule an appointment?

No, you do not need to schedule an appointment. However, fasting may be recommended for certain tests to achieve more accurate results.
