Food is what fuels our bodies so it’s no surprise that it can have a major impact on our health. All patients at Sanford Cancer Center have access to nutritional counseling, which you can request at any time. Our dietitians follow you throughout your treatment and can provide individual counseling. This can help patients determine what foods are beneficial and will provide optimum nutrition during various cancer treatments.
While there is no evidence that certain foods can treat cancer, choosing healthier options can help prevent cancer and decrease the chance of recurrence. To achieve a healthier diet, there are only two guidelines to follow:
- Embrace a plant-based, whole foods diet
- Avoid or limit processed food and meat-based foods
Herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables contain numerous cancer-fighting elements. For example, garlic is possibly effective in preventing colorectal and gastric cancer, though not in supplement form. Broccoli, cauliflower and kale are known to reduce cancer by ridding the body of toxins.
