Experience & Research

• Extensive exposure to newborn conditions as well as minimally invasive surgery and robotics
• Extensive background in the minimally invasive pectus excavatum procedure otherwise known as the Nuss procedure.
• Spent the last 7 years working with a team of simulation educators to build a 30,000 square foot simulation center known as the Simulation Center at Fairbanks Hall in Indianapolis.
• Directed the facility from 8/2009 until his departure to Sanford 7/2014 

Idea of Care

Dr. Engum thinks it is important to have fun. Whether it is the child, family or health care provider, we all need to enjoy what we are doing and at the same time provide efficient and effective care for the patient. No child comes to health care alone, so a pediatric surgeon must be able to relate to not only the patient, but also all family members. This will then inspire trust and the health care team will be viewed as a member of the family. He is a perfectionist and strive to do the best with every encounter and push all members of the team for accountability and results as a team unit.

Personal Interests

Dr. Engum is married has two wonderful children with his wife Heidi. When he has the opportunity, Dr. Engum enjoys spending time exercising, hiking, and enjoying nature with his family. He loves to spend time at the cabin, and when his body allows him, he enjoys wakeboarding, surfing and wakefoiling. Having grown up playing hockey, Dr. Engum tries to get on the ice whenever possible.
