Many health care issues involve difficult decisions for patients, families and practitioners. Author of Clinical Ethics: A Practical Approach to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine, Albert R. Jonsen, states that “ethical issues are embedded in every clinical encounter between patients and clinicians.” Clinical ethics involves an ability to recognize an ethical issue, decipher a reasonable conclusion and offer a rational recommendation. Clinical ethics is important to both those who offer and those who receive health care. Sanford Health provides support in making clinical ethics decisions through a number of committees.
Sanford USD Medical Center Biomedical Ethics Committee
This local multidisciplinary committee provides a systematic and principled approach to ethical decision-making. The committee helps identify alternative courses of action and their consequences and will offer recommendations fostering the resolution of the conflict. Any concerned individual involved in the patient's care may refer a case for review by the Biomedical Ethics Committee.
Sanford USD Medical Center Nursing Ethics Committee
Membership includes RNs from all units as well as some clinics and ancillary services. This committee recognizes that registered nurses fulfill an integral part in ethical decision making in health care and membership serves as consultants to the nursing practice at the medical center through professional support, assistance in decision-making and education.
Sanford Enterprise Ethics Committee
This regional multidisciplinary committee provides a systematic and principled approach to ethical decision-making. The committee takes a close look at issues of clinical ethics that are inclusive of the entire Sanford Health enterprise.
