A Specialist in Neurology
Mao Liu, MD, is a neurologist who diagnoses, treats and manages neurological disorders.
He has a special interest in neuromuscular disorders, including the following:
- Motor neuron diseases
- Plexopathies
- Peripheral neuropathies of various etiologies, including genetic, toxic, diabetic and inflammatory neuropathies
- Neuromuscular junction disorders, such as myasthenia gravis
- Myopathies
- Muscular dystrophies
Dr. Liu also has an interest in autonomic disorders, the focus of his postgraduate study. The autonomic nervous system controls many of the body’s automatic functions – things your body does without you having to think about them. These include blood pressure, heart rate, sweating, body temperature, digestion and bladder and sexual function. An autonomic disorder occurs when the nerves that control these automatic functions are not working as they should.
Dr. Liu is also experienced in performing nerve conduction studies and electromyography.

Dr. Liu completed his postgraduate doctoral study at Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, and received his fellowship training in neuromuscular medicine at Duke University. He now serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of South Dakota.
