Senior Vice President, Quality for Sanford Health and Chief Medical Officer for Sanford Health Plan
Jeremy Cauwels, MD, has served as the Senior Vice President of Quality for Sanford Health since January 2019 and the Chief Medical Officer for Sanford Health Plan since July of 2020. His responsibilities include safety, quality and patient experience for the organization and he co-chairs the Quality Cabinet. He also oversees the integration of health services and the plan.
During COVID-19, he has been assisting Sanford with biweekly phone calls with the nine colleges and universities that Sanford sponsors, including North Dakota State University, University of North Dakota, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Augustana University and University of Sioux Falls as well as the South Dakota High School Athletics Association in regards to initial screening, competition and return to play.
Dr. Cauwels has bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology from the University of Northern Iowa, a medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed a residency and chief resident year at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kansas. He started as a hospitalist in Sioux Falls in 2006, became the director of the group in 2014 and served as the hospital’s chief of staff from 2016 to 2018. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Society of Hospital Medicine.
He was born in South Dakota, raised in northwest Iowa, and is married to Teresa. They live in Sioux Falls and are raising three children.
