Labor Skills Workshop

Labor Skills Workshop

NOTICE: Sanford Women's is committed to providing a safe environment for you to enjoy our classes. In order to do that, the following measures are being taken:

  • Providing masks (as needed) to attendees
  • Allowing ample time between classes to properly sanitize the room and equipment
  • Continuing to offer online options for patients who are unable or uncomfortable attending an in-person class

Based on the Injoy Understanding Birth curriculum for comfort techniques, this in-person workshop offers hands-on practice for non-medicated pain management during labor and delivery. This class is designed for anyone wanting to learn labor skills to help with their pregnancy & labor in a low intervention way. This class will also provide tools of comfort for individuals who may be having an induction, epidural or cesarean section.

Participants will learn and practice various comfort techniques and relaxation skills including breathing, massage, hydrotherapy, and mindful techniques including activity imagery, visualization, focusing. This class will also expand into how aromatherapy and scent, music and nature sounds, hydrotherapy and mindful meditation can help during labor. Participants will also get to practice various comfort and labor positions using a birthing ball and peanut ball.

This 2-2.5 hour class pairs well with Birth Basics as a comprehensive birth refresher or alone for practicing comfort techniques.

When is the class? Typically held in-person once per month from 6:30 - 9 p.m.

Who attends? Moms and their support person are all encouraged to attend. The knowledge and support of those around the mother and child significantly impact the success and satisfaction of the birthing process.

When should moms plan to attend during their pregnancy? Ideally, towards the end of your pregnancy but any time after 28 weeks is preferable.

What do I bring? Something to write with and a small snack or beverage, if desired. During class you will practice labor positions. Dress in clothes that allow you to squat, bend, and get on the floor.
