Exceptional Care for Exceptional Kids

Sanford Children’s takes a team approach to pediatric care. You and your child will work closely with your primary care provider and specialists, depending on your child’s health needs. Your child may receive specialized care from:

  • Nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Occupational therapists
  • Orthopedic surgeons
  • Physiatrists
  • Physical therapists
  • Podiatrists
  • Rheumatologists

We use advanced evaluation procedures to identify the cause of your child’s ailment accurately. Knowing the source of an orthopedic issue helps us create the best treatment or rehabilitation plan for your child’s unique case. Our specialists use X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, EMG tests, bone scans, ultrasounds and more to ensure our diagnoses and treatment plans are as precise as possible.

See our specialists for these orthopedic conditions:

  • Abnormalities in walking: Many children outgrow gait abnormalities, but some need correction from special shoes, bracing or surgery.
  • Bone and joint infections: Most commonly, these infections attack the bones and joints of the arms and legs.
  • Bone cancers: Children can get several types of bone cancer. The most common in children are osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma.
  • Broken bones and fractures: A partial or complete break in a bone. Your pediatrician will correct the fracture using a splint or cast. Medication can help relieve pain. Learn about cast types and maintenance.
  • Deformities present at birth: Developmental problems in infants can cause more serious health issues later in life.
  • Dislocations: While not common in younger children, teens can suffer from dislocations after a fall or a hard hit. This joint injury occurs when the ligament holding two bones together tears.
  • Scoliosis: A spine that is an S or C shape. Physicians can correct a severely curved spine with bracing or surgery.
  • Sprains and strains: A sprain is an injury to a ligament, which holds bones or joints together. A strain is an injured muscle or tendon.

We work to help keep your child moving independently. Find an orthopedic specialist or clinic near your family to help your child live an active, healthy life.
