Jesse Dirksen, MD, a breast health specialist at Sanford Health, talks about how breast cancer surgery is used to treat breast cancer. Surgery can be used to remove the cancer by lumpectomy where the cancer tumor is removed or by mastectomy where the entire breast is removed. It’s important to remember that breast cancer surgery is just one part of the equation in treating breast cancer. Patients often need radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy or hormonal therapy to continue treatment. Your Sanford physician will discuss your options for breast cancer treatment.
