Breastfeeding Beginnings

NOTICE: Sanford Women's is committed to providing a safe environment for you to enjoy our classes. In order to do that, the following measures are being taken:

  • Providing masks (as needed) to attendees
  • Allowing ample time between classes to properly sanitize the room and equipment
  • Continuing to offer online options for patients who are unable or uncomfortable attending an in-person class

A class on factual, practical research based information on breastfeeding for the pregnant woman and her support persons. It focuses on information about the benefits of breastfeeding, positioning and support to promote a positive breastfeeding experience. Women who plan to return to work or exclusively pump will also be equipped with tools for how to prepare and store breast milk as well as planning for the transition to a bottle.

When is the class? Typically held three time per month, two classes are offered in-person, one class is offered online. This class books up quickly so reserving a spot early is encouraged.

Who attends? Moms and their support person are all encouraged to attend. The knowledge and support of those around the mother and child significantly impact the success of breastfeeding.

When should moms plan to attend during their pregnancy? Ideally, towards the end of your pregnancy but are welcome at any time. Moms who have already had their baby are encouraged to attend Baby Café for any questions or concerns they may have regarding breastfeeding.

What do I bring? Something to write with and a small snack or beverage, if desired. Explanation of how to use your particular pump can be done in the hospital and women can bring their pump to the family birth center when they deliver for any questions or concerns on its use.
