Sanford USD Medical Center Re-verified as Level II Trauma Center for Adult and Pediatric Trauma Care

Only level II trauma center for pediatric patients in the region

(Sioux Falls, SD) - Sanford USD Medical Center’s trauma center has been re-verified as a Level II Adult Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Sanford USD Medical Center is the only Pediatric Level II Trauma Center in the region.

The re-verification takes into account trauma care capabilities of Sanford USD Medical Center  including adult and pediatric patients. The level II verification for pediatrics includes the ability of Sanford Children’s Hospital to offer services such as pediatric surgery, pediatric intensive care and other services for children affected by traumatic injuries.

“We are honored that Sanford USD Medical Center is being recognized for our dedication to providing the best care for all injured patients,” said Monica Huber, RN, Vice President Emergency/Trauma/Critical Care. “The separate pediatric designation is beneficial for children across the region. Having access to pediatric services, such as a pediatric surgeon, ensures children will get the best care for a traumatic injury.”

The decision was made by the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) after an on-site review of the hospital. The review was conducted by a team experienced in the field of trauma.

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the verification program for medical centers promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.
