Sanford Establishes Personalized Spine Program

Sanford Center for Spine Success takes multidisciplinary approach

(Sioux Falls, SD) – Sanford Health now provides a personalized program for patients who choose to have spinal surgery. The Sanford Center for Spine Success offers a complete wellness approach promoting earlier mobility, shorter hospital stays and better pain management with fewer narcotics.

Gust_Troy150X150The multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses and case managers. The team collaborates to develop an individualized treatment plan to help give each patient the best outcome possible after surgery – including pain management unique to each patient’s needs.

“We take great steps before and during the surgery to minimize and manage our patients’ pain once the surgery is complete,” said Troy Gust, MD, medical director of theGust_Troy_MUG150X150 Center for Spine Success. “Our goal is to give each patient the best outcome to help them get back to what they were missing because of their back or neck pain. We are by our patients’ side from the minute they walk through the doors until their very last step in recovery.”

Whenever possible, minimally invasive approaches are used for spinal surgeries.  What used to require a large incision to correct or repair the spine may now be accomplished with a smaller incision.

“Our program is designed to provide not only a better patient experience during surgery, but better benefits after those procedures, such as lower pain scores and overall improved health and quality of life,” said Paul Hanson, president of Sanford USD Medical Center.

The Center for Spine Success also helps prepare patients before surgery by offering pre-op patient classes in a group setting. The class provides information to help patients know what to expect before, during and after surgery.

“We also recognize the importance of caregivers,” said Kathy Schuler, vice president of Sanford orthopedics and neurosciences. “Sanford’s team offers unique education for friends and family to equip them with the appropriate resources to support their loved ones once they are home.”

Reunion events will also be regularly scheduled to help patients reconnect with staff and share stories with other patients with similar experiences. Patients can learn more by calling (605) 328-1550.
