This Wednesday, May 6, at 1 p.m., MeritCare is hosting Dental Day at Horace Mann Roosevelt Elementary School, Horace Mann Building, 1025 3rd St. N., in Fargo. Following the exam, parents of students with potential problems will be notified.

"It is our goal with Adopt-A-School to encourage students to live healthy – whether that means well-balanced diets, good reading habits or proper dental care. Dental health is a problem for young students. Many don't take the time to brush, or lack insurance," says Susie Munyer, MeritCare community youth coordinator. "This program is helping bridge this gap and identify little problems before they become big problems."

In 1999, MeritCare became the first corporation in Fargo-Moorhead to adopt a school. Since that time, nearly all of the schools in the Fargo Public School District have been adopted by business partners through the efforts of the Fargo Public School Development Foundation. The decision to adopt Roosevelt, now Horace Mann Roosevelt, was to encourage MeritCare employees to become directly involved with their community and give back in a very important and tangible way – by volunteering their time and talents to help kids stay healthy. Current partnership activities include mentoring, classroom reading, safety and wellness education, career exploration and summer art enrichment. The program is coordinated by MeritCare's community connections department.
