MeritCare has launched a "go green" initiative to better manage resources and create an environment that is clean, safe and sustainable. One way MeritCare is reducing waste and utilizing resources is by introducing a new surgical scrub apparel management tool called the ScrubEx® for dispensing and receiving scrubs. It's like a vending machine for scrubs! Every time an employee places a pair of soiled scrubs in the ScrubEx® receiving unit, the machine will dispense a credit for a clean and properly sized pair of scrubs. MeritCare scrub users will have a credit of two sets of scrubs at any one time. If the user has two sets of scrubs out, then one set of scrubs must be returned before the machine will permit the distribution of more scrub apparel. A digital recording system tracks user activity and monitors the return of scrub sets. The ScrubEx® will reduce linen costs and scrub loses, and the amount of money and resources spent on replenishing inventories. MeritCare estimates a savings of nearly $112,000 a year, not including the cost of leasing the equipment, which is substantial for the first two to three years.
