Parents of 18-Year-Old Want To Extol Dangers of Under-Aged Binge Drinking

When 18-year-old Mike Huckfeldt of Fergus Falls, Minn., was first brought to MeritCare in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, his parents, Val and Mike, Fergus Falls, wanted to remain anonymous and not even acknowledge that their son was hospitalized. Now, the pair is seeking media attention to extol the dangers of under-aged binge drinking.

When 18-year-old Mike Huckfeldt of Fergus Falls, Minn., was first brought to MeritCare in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, his parents, Val and Mike, Fergus Falls, wanted to remain anonymous and not even acknowledge that their son was hospitalized. Now, the pair is seeking media attention to extol the dangers of under-aged binge drinking.

On the night of Monday, Oct. 31, Mike was binge drinking; he then fell approximately 35 ft. from a roof and sustained a traumatic brain injury. He's hospitalized in MeritCare's critical care unit.

  • Mike has been in critical condition since he was first admitted to MeritCare. On Wednesday, Nov. 9, his condition did stabilize somewhat, but his overall condition has not changed.
  • He had brain surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and is currently in a medically induced coma.
