Stroke Screen (appointment necessary) The Stroke Screen is designed to identify risk factors for developing a stroke (brain attack).
Risk Factors for Stroke
- Family History
- Previous Stroke or TIA
- Heart Disease
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Overweight
- High Blood Pressure
- High Cholesterol
- Over 55 years of age
Stroke Screen Includes
- Carotid Artery Ultrasound Assesses the carotid artery in the neck. Fatty deposits or plaque may prevent blood flow to the brain resulting in stroke.
- Blood Pressure Measures the force blood puts on blood vessel walls as it travels through the body. Chronically elevated blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke and other forms of heart disease.
- Pulse
- Lipid Panel Assesses cholesterol levels to include Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, TC/HDL Ratio, LDL (bad) Cholesterol and Triglycerides. Elevated cholesterol levels increase the likelihood for plaque buildup on artery walls (atherosclerosis).
- Glucose (Blood Sugar) Assesses risk for Diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease which occurs when the body is not able to use glucose for energy because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body is unable to use insulin correctly.
- Body Mass Index - Assesses the relationship of weight to height. Excess weight can contribute to heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and arthritis.
- Consultation with a Registered Stroke Nurse Specialist.
- Interpretation by a credentialed Neurologist. Results will be sent to home.
