Research

Comprehensive care of the heart involves more than just treating heart disease after if occurs. Through the Cardiovascular Research Institute, lead by Dr. Martin Gerdes, researchers are looking for ways that enlarged and weakened heart muscle cells might be strengthened and brought back to their original size through the use of drug therapies.

This research has received international recognition including the covers and associated articles in recent editions of Circulation (The Journal of the American Heart Association) and the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. In addition, Dr. Gerdes has presented his research results as a key note speaker at both national and international conferences.

The Cardiovascular Research Institute, a component of the South Dakota Health Research Foundation, was established to discover possible cures for heart disease – and we are getting closer everyday.
