Sanford Health will be uniquely situated to become a major site for training a new multidisciplinary genetics and genomics workforce. The Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota will include genetics training in the internal medicine residency program.
Scholarships, residencies and fellowships will be available to medical students, residents and post-doctoral students interested in genomic medicine. Training and scholarship support for non-physician genetics health care professionals will also be available. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs in genetic counseling, genomic nursing and bioinformatics will be developed through collaborations with Augustana College. In the future, Sanford Health plans to expand on these initial partnerships to include other area colleges and universities.
