Internal medicine physicians are doctors who assist adult patients by diagnosing and managing complex health issues and providing health supervision and preventative care. With more than 170 physicians trained in internal medicine in more than 40 clinic locations, these Sanford physicians provide long-term relationships with patients, supporting them in their health care choices, and providing the education and services needed to increase their health and well-being.
A team of physician champions located throughout Sanford Health's service area will provide critical leadership to implement this new enterprise-wide program:
- Samuel Nyamu, MD (Sioux Falls)
- Catherine Hajek, MD (Sioux Falls)
- Eric Larson, MD (Sioux Falls)
- Anthony Tello, MD (Bismarck)
- Rod Will, MD (Bemidji)
- Russell Wilke, MD (Fargo)
The clinical care team will also include medical geneticists and genetic counselors, who will provide information and support to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. These individuals will be embedded in our adult medicine practices, but will also continue to serve as consultants for pediatric subspecialists, oncologists, neurologists, maternal fetal medicine specialists, cardiologists and a growing number of medical subspecialties.
Sanford will establish an overarching focus on genomic medicine wherever possible throughout the internal medicine program – not only in Sioux Falls, but across the entire service area. In the coming months, we'll begin translating our patients' genetic makeup to prescribe certain medications with even greater precision. In addition, we will take a national lead role in using existing genetic markers and discovering new genetic markers that will allow internists to customize care for patients with cancer, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and other conditions.
