Department of Health and Human Services Transplant Programs Award

Bronze Award for Transplant Programs

The Department of Health and Human Services awarded Sanford USD Medical Center and Sanford Medical Center Fargo the honor for its kidney transplant work. The award measures quality of care as well as post-transplant survival rates, transplant rates and pre-transplant mortality rates. This award places Sanford in the top 23% of transplant programs in the country and we were the only medical centers in the Dakotas to secure the honor.

The Joint Commission's Inpatient Diabetes Certification Program is based on the ADA Clinical Practice Recommendation.

Certified Health Care Home

The Minnesota Department of Health certifies clinics that have met a set of rigorous standards to provide patient and family-centered care and are working to improve the overall quality and affordability of health care. MDH is nationally recognized for its certification process. Minnesota is one of eight medical home demonstration states in the nation. Minnesota State legislation established the program in 2008. Achievement of certification signifies that the clinic has met standards to the approach of primary care in which primary care providers, families and patients work in partnership to improve health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with chronic or complex health conditions. Clinics include internal medicine, family medicine and children's.

Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems

The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) is an organization comprised of for-profit and nonprofit organizations that improve the quality and safety of medical transport services. They believe the two highest priorities of an air medical transport services are patient care and safety of the transport environment. Their accreditation standards address issues of patient care, quality, communications, aviation standards, management and safety in fixed and rotary wing services as well as ground inter facility services that provide critical care transports. Each standard is supported by measureable criteria to ensure a program’s level of quality.

Joint Commission Certifications – Hip Fracture, Joint Replacement – Hip, Joint Replacement – Knee & Joint Replacement – Shoulder

The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™ for its hip fracture program as well as its knee replacement, hip replacement, and shoulder replacement programs. Sanford USD Medical Center became the first health care program in the nation to receive all four certifications and did so by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety in hospitals.

Level II Trauma Center

At a Level II, emergency room services and surgical services must be available 24/7. A Level II trauma center must also be part of a hospital that provides acute critical care and care throughout the continuum of the patients' illness and injury, as well as an in-house lab. They also need advanced life support immediately available on air transport, 9-1-1 and long-distance transport.

Sanford USD Medical Center and the team at Sanford Heart Hospital have earned gold recognition for achieving Mission: Lifeline® STEMI Receiving Center Quality indicators and its work to continually improve the patient experience.

Mission: Lifeline® seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients from timely access to appropriate treatments. Mission: Lifeline also focuses on improving the system of care for patients.

The Platinum Standard in Heart Attack Care

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association commended Sanford for its critical step in saving lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients with the National Cardiovascular Data Registry Registry–Get With The Guidelines Platinum Performance Achievement Award. To receive the Platinum Award, Sanford consistently followed the treatment guidelines for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.
