Sanford Children's Miller Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – Sioux Falls

The Miller Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls cares for critically ill and/or injured infants, children and adolescents in a setting with 12 beds, private family suites, and state-of-the-art equipment that rotates 360 degrees to allow immediate access to the patient. The unit is directed by two full-time, Fellowship Trained and Board Certified Pediatric Intensivists (pediatric physicians specifically trained to care for children in critical conditions) who are available 24/7.

Your Child's Care Team

Children may be admitted to the PICU due to the severity of their condition, for close monitoring following surgery or for complications from disease or injuries that require constant care, life support and monitoring. Your child's critical care team will include pediatric intensivists (physicians specifically trained to care for children in critical care conditions), PICU nurses, pediatric respiratory care, pediatric anesthesiology, pharmacy, nutritionists, social workers, child life specialists, hospital chaplains and other pediatric specialists from Sanford Children's. We work together as a team to provide the best care possible for your child.

Support During a Difficult Time

We know that having a child in the PICU is frightening and stressful. Uncertainties and an unfamiliar environment can be overwhelming. We are here to provide medical and emotional support to parents, siblings and family members as well as to each child receiving care. Please ask questions. We are here to do our best to explain how your child is doing and encourage parents to be present and as involved as medically possible in the care of your child.

Low Noise, Low Light Healing Environment

Technology allows us to continually monitor your child from anywhere in the PICU, giving you the assurance that we can see how your child is doing at all times without interrupting healing sleep. Because of the critical nature of illness or injury in the PICU, we maintain a low lighting and low noise environment and limit the use of non-PICU wireless technology. We also limit patient visitors to immediate family members only. Parents are allowed to remain with their child round the clock.

Conscious Sedation Services

Our on-site pediatric critical care team is also able to provide conscious sedation services to kids who are in the hospital or visiting for a procedure. This experienced team of critical care physicians also serves as medical directors for our Pediatric Transport Team.

Pediatric Transport Team

Miller PICU is the most advanced PICU in the region. We treat many children referred by other hospitals and physicians and work closely with primary care physicians to coordinate care. When time is of essence, our Pediatric Air Transport service provides fast transfer to our facility 24/7. It is staffed by a team of pediatric critical care specialists.
