Many esophageal disorders including heartburn and acid reflux can be treated with medications and/or changes in diet and lifestyle. However, if your symptoms persist, Sanford is here to help. More and more Americans are experiencing a serious form of acid reflux, called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. GERD can be very painful, chronic and can disrupt daily lives. GERD left untreated can worsen until patients develop Barrett’s disease or even esophageal cancer.
Sanford is proud to be one of the first in the Dakotas to offer a new innovative procedure to treat GERD called LINX® Reflux Management System. LINX® is a less invasive procedure in which small flexible band of beads with magnetic cores is secured similar to a loose bracelet around the lower esophagus. The band restores the body’s natural barrier and has enough pressure to prevent reflux while allowing food and liquids to pass into the stomach.
Dr. Luis Garcia and Dr. Matthew Fabian are the only two doctors in North Dakota trained to perform the LINX® surgery to patients battling GERD. With just over 1300 LINX procedures performed to date with 6 years of follow up. Sanford is proud to be on the forefront of offering this new innovative procedure. For patients with chronic GERD, the LINX® surgery can help prevent abnormal amounts of acid in the esophagus. This procedure has been found to reduce or no longer need to take medications. LINX® surgery is a minimally invasive surgery and most patients are able to go home after one night in the hospital.Learn More
