Frequently Asked Questions

What is home medical equipment?

Home medical equipment is a category of devices used by people who receive care at home from non-professional caregivers or family members.

What will my insurance cover?

Coverage will vary by the insurance policy. If you need medical equipment prescribed by your physician, we will contact your insurance to learn the details of your plan’s coverage.

Please note that some insurance policies require us to get prior authorization for some medical devices before we can give it to you. This process can take anywhere from five to 20 days.

Does Medicare cover home medical equipment?

Medicare covers a variety of home medical equipment. The list includes:

  • Wheelchairs
  • Hospital beds
  • Canes
  • Crutches
  • Walkers
  • Orthopedic bracing
  • PAP devices
  • Oxygen
  • Ventilators
  • Pressure mattresses
  • Lifts
  • Nebulizers
  • Apnea monitors
  • Bili lights
  • Other supplies

Can I rent equipment?

Most of our equipment is rentable. For medical equipment prescribed by a physician, your insurance company may determine if the device is billed as a rental or purchase. If you have a short-term need for a device, we do offer rentals. Most rentals are a monthly fee.

Does Sanford Health buy back home medical equipment?

As directed by our accreditation standards, Sanford Health does not buy back equipment previously purchased by a patient or insurance company.

We do accept some equipment donations from individuals who wish to donate devices to a specific department or to patients with financial hardship. We only accept equipment that properly functions and meets all the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Does Sanford Health sell used home medical equipment?

We want each of our customers to enjoy the full manufacturer warranty for the products they purchase. Because of this, we do not usually sell used equipment.

What is your return policy?

All refunds or exchanges must be made within 30 days of purchase. Items that are used, worn next to the skin, fitted or labeled as a single patient disposable item may not be returned unless covered by a manufacturer warranty. We do not provide refunds or exchanges without a receipt or for products with opened, broken or missing packages. Refunds greater than $25 will be mailed to the customer within 30 days of the return.

Do I need a prescription for some products?

We will need a prescription if the device is used for a specific medical condition and is billable by insurance.

Is your equipment safe to be used by non-professionals?

We sell durable medical equipment intended to be used by non-professionals. Our products are designed to withstand repeated use in the home by people with little health care training.

What if you don’t carry the equipment I need?

Our locations have access to equipment and supplies from a wide range of vendors. Our network can assist you in finding the item that best suits your needs.

What are your locations’ hours?

Do you deliver or ship products?

We do provide delivery services for most of our supplies. Ask our sales team how we can best accommodate your needs.

What if my equipment breaks?

We honor all manufacturer warranties. In most cases, you can rent a replacement device while your patient-owned equipment is evaluated and repaired.

Does Sanford Health carry pediatric home medical equipment?

We provide devices to people of all ages. Children can use most of our listed equipment as we can adapt our products to pediatric sizes.

Does Sanford Health sell CPAP supplies?

We do. Our trained staff and team of respiratory therapists are ready to fit CPAP equipment for our customers and instruct them in its use. All of our locations have CPAP therapy available.
