The Next Children's World Clinics

In 2007, South Dakota businessman and philanthropist Denny Sanford set a standard in health care philanthropy with an unprecedented gift of $400 million to Sanford Health. Sanford Health announced that his gift would fund several initiatives including establishing a network of Sanford Children's Clinics around the world in communities seeking to expand access to pediatric care to those in need. We have set a goal to open 20 clinics worldwide in the next decade.

We're happy to announce that the next three locations will be Baja region, Mexico; Ghana, Africa and Karmiel, Israel. Each location was chosen for its demonstrated need for pediatric primary care. Sanford Health is working closely with local governments and organizations throughout the process to ensure that children will have the best access to care possible.

In addition to pediatric clinics in Sanford Health's main service area, Sanford Children's has opened pediatric clinics in Duncan, Oklahoma and Oceanside, California. Clinics in Klamath Falls, Oregon and West Dublin, Ireland are also underway.

Baja, Mexico

The Baja area is experiencing a population boom and healthcare services are unable to keep up with demand. More than 50% of the population are children. The Baja Children's Clinic is also sponsored by a generous $2.5 million gift by Sioux Falls native, Tom Walsh, via the Los Cabos Children's Foundation. The clinic is expected to open in 2013.

Ghana, Africa

Through conversations with World Health Organizations, Ghana has been identified as an area in need of pediatric care. Ghanan native, Kojo Benjamin Taylor, of Minneapolis, is working with Sanford Health to coordinate the project. Currently, children in rural locations often must travel four hours to receive care. The Ghana Children's Clinic will provide primary pediatric care closer to home.

Karmiel, Israel is called the city of families and children. It has seen rapid growth and a need for pediatric clinics. We are working closely with Maccabi Clinic Israel to establish a children's clinic in this northern Galilee area. The clinic is to be opened within five years.
