Volunteers are an essential part of our hospice team. We serve a diverse group of patients and families and our volunteers should reflect that diversity to serve their needs. Volunteers come to us with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. They are well-rounded, with talents to share gifts of music and reading. They help with light household tasks. In some cases, the most important gift volunteers give is simply being present. It is important that volunteers know their time is appreciated and well-invested.
Hospice volunteers spend time in the homes of patients and their families. This necessitates an application and interview process to verify the person is right for Sanford Hospice volunteer duties. Sanford also has an organized training program for patient care volunteers. These training programs cover topics including: bereavement support, confidentiality, listening skills, loss and grief, signs and symptoms of approaching death, understanding hospice and working with families.
