Sanford Children's Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic, led by Patrick Munson, MD, provides multidisciplinary care, including corrective surgery, to children affected by these birth defects. Our program is the first and only certified cleft palate team (CPT) in South Dakota. The clinic was recognized by the Commission on Approval of Teams under the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and Cleft Palate Foundation.
Cleft lip or palate is surgically correctable early on in life. It is one of the most common birth defects in the United States, affecting approximately one in every 800 births. Sanford pediatric surgeons are here to provide surgical treatment, typically when patients are between 12 to 18 months old. We also have a dedicated team of specialists who follow the patient through childhood to ensure proper hearing, speech and development.
