Sanford Health Earns a Spot on 2011 List of Top Technology Innovators across America

Sanford recognized for efforts in IT innovation, ingenuity and global capabilities.

(Sioux Falls, SD; Fargo, ND) – For the sixth consecutive year, Sanford Health has made the InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation’s most innovative users of business technology.  The 2011 list was revealed at a gala awards ceremony at the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, CA last week.

“I am pleased to see our organization on the InformationWeek 500 list once again, recognizing our continued commitment to enabling quality healthcare through technology,” says Sanford Health Chief Information Officer Arlyn Broekhuis.

A key consideration in receiving this year’s recognition was Sanford’s efforts in putting patients first, before disaster strikes. Sanford’s proactive business continuity planning has provided the necessary disaster recovery infrastructure for Sanford Health’s critical electronic medical record (EMR) system, “Sanford One Chart,” through upgrades to existing hardware, purchase of new hardware, and development of new procedures to mitigate the effects of planned and unplanned downtimes for the EMR.

Other key initiatives over the last year included supporting an information technology (IT) infrastructure with an increasingly global reach, and ingenuity in the development and expansion of “Sanford One Chart.”
“‘Sanford One Chart’ allows us to speak with one voice with each other and with our patients, and provides connectivity to deliver a seamless experience across a large, rural network,” says Broekhuis.

On “My Sanford Chart,” an innovative web adaptation of “Sanford One Chart,” patients have convenient access to a variety of features, including viewing their medical record, reviewing lab results, and scheduling appointments. More than 30,000 Sanford Health patients are active users.

“For 23 years, the InformationWeek 500 has chronicled and honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. “In this day and age, however, being innovative isn’t enough. Companies and their IT organizations need to innovate faster than ever before to stay a step or two ahead of their customers, partners, and competitors. This year’s ranking placed special emphasis on those high-octane business technology innovators.”

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies. Top winners have included:  The Vanguard Group, CME Group, Conway, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels and Unum.  The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
