(Fargo, ND & Sioux Falls, SD) - Sanford Health announced plans today to open a Sanford Children's Clinic in Carmiel, Israel. The Sanford Children's Clinic in Israel is the one of seven Sanford Children's Clinics announced by Sanford as part of the initiatives outlined after a $400 million donation from Denny Sanford in 2007. Like other Sanford Children's Clinics, it will provide general pediatric services to area children and be designed like a castle. One of the leading and comprehensive providers of health care in Israel, Maccabi Healthcare Services, will partner with Sanford Health and provide subspecialty pediatric services within the same facility which is expected to open in 2014.

Sanford Children's Clinic in Carmiel, Israel

"Carmiel is called 'the city of families and children' and the need for children's health care services is rapidly growing with tremendous numbers of young families," stated Dave Link, Sanford Health senior executive vice president. "Access to health care outside the city center in residential areas is limited, so we are pleased to be able to expand health care to this area of need."

In 2007, South Dakota businessman and philanthropist Denny Sanford set a standard in health care philanthropy with an unprecedented gift of $400 million to Sanford Health. Sanford Health announced that his gift would fund several initiatives including establishing a network of Sanford Children's Clinics around the world in communities seeking to expand access to pediatric care to those who need it. In addition to the original gift from Mr. Sanford, the clinic is supported through funding of Maccabi Healthcare Services. The idea for the clinic location was originally presented to Sanford Health from Danny and Talia Bergerano of New York City, NY.

"The Carmiel, Israel area is experiencing rapid growth and with that comes the incrased need for health care. In fact, according to the national master plan, by 2020 this city will have a population of approximately 120,000 residents, many of them children," stated Gaby Polliack, MD, Maccabi Healthcare Services' Head of Primary Health Care Division. "We look forward to partnering with Sanford Health to provide care to children of this rapidly expanding region of Israel."

In addition to the planned clinic for Carmiel, Israel, Sanford has also announced plans to open clinics in Baja area, Mexico and Ghana, Africa. Sanford Children's has opened pediatric clinics in Duncan, OK and Oceanside, CA. Clinics in Klamath Falls, OR and West Dublin, Ireland are underway.
