Sanford Doctor Appointed to National Committee

National Federation of State High School Associations Sports Medicine Advisory Committee

(Sioux Falls, SD) – Michael F. Bergeron, PhD, Director of the National Institute for Athletic Health & Performance at Sanford and professor of Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota, was recently appointed to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC).

As one of 14 members of the SMAC,  Dr. Bergeron will work to address sports-related health and injury risk management issues by advising the NFHS on sports medicine concerns as they relate to rules writing and the programs and services of the NFHS. The SMAC will also provide the NFHS leadership and membership with current information and guidance on sports medicine issues through the NFHS Sports Medicine Handbook, the Sports Medicine section of the NFHS Web site and other NFHS publications.

“All high school athletes, coaches, administrators and parents need to be educated on the most current sports medicine information and recommendations,” explained Dr. Bergeron. “This is a terrific opportunity for Sanford to establish connectivity across the country in high school sports in our efforts to promote safe and healthy participation.”

The SMAC will also develop and administer a national high school sports injury surveillance system for analyzing and practically interpreting injury data collected from all sports. From this information, the SMAC will make recommendations to improve safety and reduce injury risk in high school sports through appropriate changes in rules or equipment. Dr. Bergeron will serve on the committee for four years as a researcher.
