TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)

Sanford Health is now offering TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), a minimally invasive procedure for treating carotid artery disease.

Designed to help lower the risk of a stroke, this innovative procedure involves inserting a tube into the carotid artery through a small side-to-side incision just above the collar bone. Connected to the tube is a system that directs blood away from the brain and through a filter where it’s checked for plaque before it returns to the body. After the system is in place, your surgeon will implant a stent to keep the carotid artery open to allow for blood flow.

The procedure produces a smaller scar and is performed in half the time of traditional methods, typically requiring only a one-night stay in the hospital. It limits stress on the heart and reduces the risk of future strokes, heart attacks and cranial nerve damage.
