FARGO, N.D.–Design plans are completed for Cully’s Kids Cabin, which will be the play area at the Children’s Hospital to be located at the new Sanford Fargo Medical Center.

The play area will include child life specialists, play and relaxation areas, an arts and crafts area, a kitchen projects and nutrition area, a teen space, a toddler play space, alternative therapy space for immune-compromised patients, an all-star hockey shootout area, a video and interactive area and a green screen to create digital projects.

Cully’s Kids Cabin is being made possible by the 2012, $1 million donation from the Cullen Children’s Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation started by Matt and Bridget Cullen.

The donation will go toward the development of construction costs for the 3,000 square foot space, furniture, fixtures and equipment. The current Children’s Hospital play area is 525 square feet, making the new space a significant increase in size.

“We are so grateful for the generous donation and continuous support from the Cullen Children’s Foundation. This space will be such an amazing retreat for the kids at Sanford Children’s Hospital,” said Chris Tiongson, M.D., of Sanford Health.

Cully’s Kids Cabin, which received its name due to its cabin-like design reminiscent of the North Dakota and Minnesota outdoors, will also boast a strong hockey theme influenced by Matt Cullen’s career in hockey. A former Minnesota Wild hockey player, Matt now plays for the Nashville Predators.

“Our goal has always been to help better the lives of children with health care issues. We are honored to leave our legacy here at home for the children in our community,” said Matt Cullen of the Cullen Children’s Foundation.

The Cullens noted that their goal was to develop a space “where kids can just be kids.” Cullys Kids rendering

“If we help bring smiles to children’s faces, we’ve succeeded in our goal. This will be a place where kids can simply have fun without worrying about needles or medication; it’ll just be fun,” said Bridget Cullen of the Cullen Children’s Foundation.

Cully’s Kids Cabin will be located in the new Sanford Fargo Medical Center, which is under construction just along I-94 east of Veteran’s Boulevard.

The new medical center is part of Sanford’s Building Tomorrow Today campaign supporting a $50 million effort to offer excellence in caring, healing, discovering, leading and building to ensure this region has access to patient care and supportive programs for generations to come.

The medical center’s construction is set to be completed in late 2016, with the first patients being seen in 2017.
