Services and Treatments

Head and neck cancer can be complex and may involve several different types of treatments.    Now more than ever, new medical advances and innovative therapies means there are more options for patients. Your team of doctors and nurses will discuss your personalized treatment plan with you and support you all the way through your journey to wellness.

What We Treat

  • Skull base
  • Ear and temporal bone
  • Sarcomas of the head and neck
  • Melanoma/skin cancers of the head and neck
  • Head and neck issues in patients with tumors elsewhere in the body

Surgery

Surgery

Head and neck surgery may be performed for diagnostic purposes, used to determine the extent of a tumor, used to remove the tumor, to manage pain, or to control the effects of a tumor. Your head and neck cancer care team will discuss with you whether surgery is an appropriate option for you.

Radiation Therapy

Head and neck radiation therapy uses special equipment to deliver high doses of radiation to cancerous tumors, killing or damaging them so that they cannot grow, multiply, or spread. Through advancements in technology, radiation is guided to target a specific tumor or area to reduce the amount of damage to the surrounding health tissue or cells. Your Sanford radiation oncologist will work with your head and neck cancer care team to decide if radiation therapy is right for you.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a medicine used to eliminate cancer cells, slow down the growth of cancer cells, and help with cancer symptoms.  Our double-boarded medical oncologists provide the latest in cancer therapies and work with patients to manage pain and improve quality of life.

Survivorship

Our survivorship clinic is designed to bring together patients, family members and caregivers to help address the emotional, physical and financial effects of cancer. Once treatment is completed, patients are scheduled for an appointment with our nurse practitioner.

Radiology

Specializes in providing leading imaging services through state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and treat a variety of head and neck cancer. With multiple imaging services including X-rays, MRI, CT and ultrasounds, our radiologists and technologists work closely with referring physicians to enable precise diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Pathology

Specializes in studying and diagnosing head and neck cancer through the examination of organs, tissues, cells and bodily fluids. Our leading pathologists examine and provide diagnosis from blood draws, urine tests, biopsies and other medical tests. We work closely with referring physicians to provide accurate and detailed analysis with the goal to assist physicians in providing precise diagnoses and treatment recommendations.

Genetic Counseling

Not all head and neck cancer is inherited, but 10 percent of the time cancer is caused by a faulty gene that runs in a family. A cancer gene can be passed from generation to generation and can increase an individual’s change of developing cancer during their lifetime. Sanford Health has a genetic counseling program. You can discuss your questions with your head and neck cancer care team to find out if a genetic counselor referral is right for you.
