Sanford Cancer Center - Gynecologic Cancers

At Sanford Health, our gynecologic cancer team offers exceptional compassion and quality in cancer care, starting the moment you are diagnosed, throughout your treatments and into survivorship. Through our outreach clinics, telemedicine capabilities and coordinating care with providers, we are able to serve patients at Sanford facilities in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.

Our team of experts is led by gynecologic oncologist Dr. Maria Bell. Dr. Bell specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system. She works with precancerous, malignant and challenging benign conditions and is internationally recognized for her experience including performing over 1,000 robotic surgeries and publishing several articles on its use for gynecologic oncology.

The gynecologic cancer team works closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, researchers, genetic counselors, psychologist, dietitians and nurse navigators to personalize treatments plans to each patient’s specific situation.

Gynecologic cancers originate in the female reproductive organs, including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. Each gynecologic cancer is unique with different signs and symptoms, different risk factors and different preventive strategies. As with any cancer diagnosis, early detection increases the chance of a cure.

Specialized Gynecologic Oncology Services

At Sanford Cancer Center, our specialized gynecologic oncology team provides expert diagnosis and treatment using advanced technologies, national guidelines and the latest research. Gynecologic cancer treatment can include one or a combination of the following:

Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery

Sanford offers minimally invasive robotic surgery, which allows for quicker recovery, less pain and the ability to get started with treatment sooner.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy

Our patients have access to the latest in chemotherapy treatments. We can coordinate your chemotherapy via telemedicine or with medical oncologists closer to home to implement the gynecologic oncology treatment plan that’s right for you.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses special equipment to deliver high doses of radiation to cancerous tumors, killing or damaging them so they cannot grow, multiply or spread. Your Sanford radiation oncologist will work with your gynecologic cancer care team to decide the appropriate type of radiation for your specific cancer.

Clinical Trials

Clinical Trials

All gynecologic oncology patients are screened for eligibility to clinical trials. By participating in research studies, Sanford patients have access to nationally sponsored trials often found at large academic cancer centers, but administered here- close to your home. National Cancer Institute (NCI) trials feature cutting-edge treatments, medications and advanced care that may not be otherwise available in the clinic setting. This means patients have increased and improved treatment options, as well as better overall patient care.

Genetic Testing

Genetic Testing

Some cancers have hereditary components or can lead to another type of cancer. Genetic testing can be a valuable resource in planning out your treatments and for the health of your family. You can discuss with your providers if meeting with a genetic counselor would be beneficial for you.

Survivorship

Survivorship

A patient is a cancer survivor the moment she is diagnosed. The Sanford Gynecologic Oncology team offers help and support every step of the way. Survivorship visits are offered to patients after completion of treatment to give a comprehensive treatment summary and review plans for future care. This includes discussing side effect management, what signs and symptoms to watch for, routine screenings and follow-ups, recurrence prevention recommendations, and offering various resources and support based on an individual’s needs and desires.
