Preparing for Surgery

A Surgical case manager will call you a few days before your surgery date to talk about what time you should arrive and gather your medical information, any important tests you had done, and a medication list. In the event that you have not heard from the staff by the day before your surgery, PLEASE CALL them between 7am - 3pm at 605-328-2601 or toll free at 1-866-870-0713.

Pre-op Instructions

  • Do not eat or drink anything including water, after midnight the night before surgery (unless you have been instructed by your care team). This includes gum, water, candy, coffee, or food of any kind. Failure to follow these instructions may result in delay or cancellation of your surgery.
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not bring jewelry, credit cards, large amounts of money, or other valuables with you the day of your operation. You will need to have money with you for prescriptions. The person accompanying you can hold it.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Remove all piercing before coming to the hospital (ex. earrings, tongue, belly button)
  • If you wear glasses, dentures, or a hearing aid, bring along a case to put them in during surgery
  • Bathe or shower the night before or the morning before coming to the hospital to minimize the chance of infection
  • Bring along all the medications you are taking in the original bottles. This includes vitamins, herbal supplements, and medications that you are taking without a prescription. All medicines can affect your anesthesia care.

Arrangements before outpatient surgery
