Shocker Baseball Developement Clinic

The First Annual Shocker Baseball Development Clinic presented by the Sanford POWER Center was held November 28, 2008. It featured Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Wichita State standout Dusty Coleman, now in the Oakland A’s organization, former Wichita State Shocker teammate Conor Gillaspie and Augustana’s Mike Loberg who are both now in the San Francisco Giants organization was an overwhelming success. 129 campers and 20 coaches participated in the inaugural clinic and all were engaged and excited about learning more about baseball. Campers ages 6-14 were able to learn and develop their baseball skills while learning the fundamentals of baseball and that working hard can be a lot of fun.

Lots of smiles, laughter and effort went into making this event successful on many different levels. “It’s always nice to come home and give back to the kids from my community, as well as, kids from all over the Midwest and share my passion for the game of baseball with them,” said Coleman. The main focus of the clinic was to develop the fundamental skills of the game of baseball and to give campers an opportunity to learn some new techniques and drills they can work on over the winter. By doing this hopefully their efforts will translate into better preparation and better baseball this spring and summer.

The clinic was broken down into two sessions, the first session was provided by the staff at the Sanford POWER Center, where they showed the campers how to properly warm-up, stretch, and strengthen their bodies for baseball. Many of the drills, stretches and techniques they learned that day can be applied to their everyday activity in making them better fit on a daily basis.

The second session of the clinic was provided by the Augustana College baseball staff, Dusty, Conor, Mike, other area high school coaches and several current Augustana baseball players. During this session the focus was on hitting, fielding and throwing and each group was taught age specific skills and drills to help them improve their games. “Many of the fundamental drills are the same at the professional level as they are for the 5, 6 & 7 year olds,” adds Coleman. “Baseball is a game of developing a very solid foundation of skills and repeating them over and over until those skills become habit and natural. We do the same basic drills today in the professional rank we did when I was your age,“ Coleman explained to the group of campers.

“I wanted to thank the Sanford POWER Center for supporting this event and making the Shocker Baseball Clinic possible. I’ve done the Sanford POWER program since I was 11 years old and it’s helped me become the athlete I’ve become today,” said Coleman.

Mark your calendars for the 2nd Annual Shocker Baseball Development Clinic presented by the Sanford POWER Center. It will be Friday, November 27, 2009.

Sioux Falls Announces Junior Football Complex
(Sioux Falls, South Dakota) – The City of Sioux Falls has secured an offer of space for badly needed expansion of its South Dakota Junior Football program, Mayor Dave Munson announced today.

The land, located in western Sioux Falls north of Benson Road, could be used for a total of 14 fields, with eight being constructed in the first phase of development.

The City currently uses land at Riverdale Park for junior football, which has outgrown the three fields available there.

The new land, a total of 50 acres, is proposed to be donated by Sanford Health as part of a new youth athletic complex.

“For ten years, we have had to turn away young people who wanted to play junior football as part of this program,” Mayor Dave Munson said. “Through this project, we will have room to add additional fields to meet the needs of our growing young population years into the future.”

The City is proposing to invest $4.2 million to construct eight fields and develop the site. The value of the land donation is an estimated $3 million from Sanford Health. South Dakota Junior Football has pledged to privately raise $1.5 million for goal post installation, field scoreboards and signage, lighting, and a concession/storage building.

“The City has a deep commitment to this community and our kids, and we are honored to be part of this project” said Mark Johnston, Sanford Health Vice President of Administration and Corporate Communications. “Like the City, we strive to encourage physical activity and wellness for people of all ages.”

The South Dakota Junior Football fields will be part of a larger, 158-acre athletic complex that is ultimately proposed to house a hockey facility, Sanford Health POWER Center, sports retail, housing, an office park, and additional green space and sports facilities.

The land is adjacent to the Big Sioux River and is connected to the City’s recreation trail, with future trails proposed throughout the site.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to partner with a great corporate citizen who is committed to Sioux Falls residents,” Munson said.

Design is proposed to start in early 2009 with construction through 2010. Fields would be open for play in the fall of 2011.

To reach the location, go west on Russell Street to Westport Avenue, north on Westport Avenue to Benson Road, and east along the undeveloped road.
