One in five people in the United States is affected by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), more commonly known as acid reflux or heartburn. This is a chronic disease caused from stomach acid flowing from the stomach back into the esophagus.
If left untreated, GERD can worsen and develop into Barrett’s disease or even esophageal cancer. Previously, the main treatment option was medication. But now, GERD sufferers now have a new treatment option known as LINX® Reflux Management System, which helps stop reflux at its source.
The system is a small, flexible band of magnets enclosed in titanium beads that are connected by titanium wires. It is implanted around the weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES), just above the stomach. The magnetic attraction between the beads keeps the weak LES closed to help prevent reflux.
Patients who receive this procedure have been found to either reduce or no longer need medications. LINX surgery is a minimally invasive procedure and most patients are able to go home after one night in the hospital.
