FARGO, N.D. -– One year after opening Sanford Medical Center Fargo (SMCF), the organization on Wednesday announced its vision for Sanford Fargo over the next decade, which includes additional facilities and expansion plans that will help it better serve its growing patient base in the region.

The effort includes new buildings on the SMCF campus, an extensive investment in its South University and Broadway locations and additional clinic locations in rapidly growing areas of the metro. The organization anticipates an investment of $200 million.

The envisioned growth will bring 200 more doctors and hundreds of additional nurses and support staff, and it will pump millions of dollars in economic impact into the area as more people from across the region come to Fargo for their medical care. Additional staff will allow for improved access, new specialties and continuing advancements for the region’s health care.

The first major addition will be a 100,000-square-foot heart and vascular center on land east of the new medical center that will break ground in the next two to three years. Future plans on that site will also include facilities focused on women’s and children’s services.

“We have big plans, and we’ll monitor how these next years go and evolve with the changes,” said Nate White, Sanford Fargo president. “Fargo is the fastest-growing metro in the region, and that brings with it opportunities for Sanford to add new medical services a community this size deserves. We want to keep people as close to home as possible for the care they need.”

Projects underway

The new projects are in addition to several already in the works, including the expansion of Sanford Research in Fargo, the addition of Level 1 Trauma status and other changes at its three main locations:

  • Broadway: Remodeling will soon be complete in the former emergency department at Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center, which anchors the downtown Fargo campus. That will expand infusion rooms from 30 to 40. The longer-term vision for the cancer center includes adding services and specialties not previously offered locally, such as bone marrow transplant.
  • South University: This campus will eventually become a stand-alone orthopedics and sports medicine clinic and hospital, the only one in the state. The foot and ankle clinic has already moved over to this campus as a part of this move. The orthopedics clinic located on 25th Street in Fargo is being re-purposed for other services, with the pain clinic already relocating there.
  • SMCF: Expansion begins this fall on the shelled space that was created for future needs. Of the 96 available shelled rooms, 18 on the eighth floor will be finished.

Other plans

There are also plans for growth and expansion in the booming southern part of Fargo and West Fargo areas, with additional clinic services for primary care, women’s and children’s in Veterans Square, Horace and west of the Fargo metro area. The Veterans Square clinic is expected to open late spring 2019, with nearly 6,000 square feet dedicated to children’s and primary care services.

We had an incredibly successful year at all of our Sanford Fargo locations, and we already exceeded our five-year volume projections at the new medical center,” White said. “This was a huge milestone, but it’s just the beginning of what’s next in further establishing Sanford Fargo as a destination medical center.”
