Sanford Health Great American Bike Race raises more than $420,000

Bismarck Sanford Behavioral Health awarded Most Creative Team

Great American Bike Race(Bismarck, N.D.) –The 17th annual Sanford Health Great American Bike Race (GABR), held Saturday, April 13, at Century High School in Bismarck, raised more than $420,000 shattering last year’s record of $340,000. GABR funds pay for medical services and purchase equipment such as wheelchairs, communication devices and adaptive tricycles for children and young adults with cerebral palsy or related disabilities.

The 2013 GABR involved 1,320 riders on 110 bikes pedaling a combined 8,131.88 miles. Awards were presented in the following categories:

The Lindsay Trauger Memorial Spirit Award was presented to Bob Eriksen. He is in charge of results reporting at the race. Eriksen serves on the race committee and has been involved with GABR since it started in 1997. 

For the first time, the Sanford Psychalists team was awarded “Most Creative Team.” The team was made up of Sanford Behavioral Health employees dressed up as animals such as an elephant, penguin, tiger and cow.

“We really did not know what to expect this year because we had such super fundraising last year,” said Beth Thune, GABR co-director. “We are thrilled that this event has been embraced by so many people—individuals, families and businesses. Everyone is there for one purpose and that is to help others.  I heard so many people say that they consider this the best day of the year—that is really heartwarming.”
