SD High School Basketball Hall of fame moving to Pentagon

Tribute to hoops will relocate in fall of 2013

HS Hall of Fame(Sioux Falls, SD) – The South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame, a program to honor the state’s best prep basketball athletes, will move to the Pentagon at the Sanford Sports Complex as the facility opens in the fall of 2013.

A spacious area near the lobby of the Pentagon will be dedicated to the preservation of basketball lore in the Mount Rushmore state. Until relocating, the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame will stay at its current home at the Community Center in Madison.

“This one-of-a-kind facility will provide tremendous exposure and increase accessibility for the Hall of Fame,” said South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame Executive Director Myron Moen, a 2012 inductee. “We have incredible memorabilia that chronicles basketball in South Dakota; this space will allow us to expand our exhibits and paint a more complete picture of the history of hoops in our state.”

Established in 2009, the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame installed its first class in 2010. A total of 49 athletes have been inducted in the Hall of Fame’s history.

“The Hall of Fame is an exact fit for the Pentagon, which will include nostalgic features that honor the game of basketball in our state,” said Eric Larsen, general manager of the Sanford Sports Complex. “It will enhance the atmosphere of the facility and serve as a tribute to some of South Dakota’s finest athletes.”

The Pentagon is a 160,000-square-foot facility comprised of nine basketball courts (six high school regulation, two professional/college practice courts and the “heritage” court). While the entire facility features modern design and amenities, the heritage court located in the center of the building will pay homage to 1950s/1960s basketball.

The facility, as the name describes, is the shape of a pentagon. Floor space can be transitioned from basketball to accommodate 11 volleyball courts and also wrestling and cheer/dance events. The facility is focused on athletics, but will also serve other community needs.

The Pentagon is the center piece of the Sanford Sports Complex located along Westport Avenue between Benson Road and West 54th Street.  The 162-acre complex is the home of the Sanford FIELDHOUSE and nine Junior Football fields. The Sioux Falls Ice Sports Association recently announced plans to construct the Scheels IcePlex. The Sioux Falls Tennis Association is also working to construct an indoor venue on site.

The South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame will hold its fourth annual induction ceremony in Madison at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse on March 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased by calling 605-270-1262 or e-mailing myronmoen@yahoo.com
