(Fargo, ND) – Sanford Medical Center in Fargo has been re-verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes Sanford’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.
Sanford has held this designation since 1989, when it became the first verified Level II trauma center in the state of North Dakota. Key elements of Level II Trauma Centers include: 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, as well as coverage by the specialties of emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, radiology and critical care.
To receive verification, Sanford voluntarily took part in an on-site review by a team of out-of-state surgeons. The review included reviewing Sanford Fargo’s emergency center, operating room, recovery room, critical care units, surgical unit, blood bank, lab and radiology, as well as evaluation of Sanford’s medical records and quality management/ performance improvement processes.
North Dakota was one of the first states to create an organized state system promoting optimal care of the trauma patient. Based on the North Dakota State Trauma regulations, effective June 1, 2001, major trauma patients are to be taken to the trauma center with the highest level of designation. North Dakota has five levels of trauma center designations. Levels I-III must be verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma; Levels IV and V are designated by the state.
Currently there are no Level I trauma centers in the Dakotas. Larger volumes of patients and medical specialties such as microvascular surgery are needed for Level I; currently the closest facility to Fargo is located in Minneapolis.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the verification program for medical centers promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.
