National Search Process Reveals Sanford Researcher as Best Candidate for the Position
(Sioux Falls, SD; Fargo, ND) – Following an extensive national search process, Sanford Research/USD has selected one of its own physician scientists, H. Eugene Hoyme, MD, as its newest president. Dr. Hoyme will guide the current and future direction of Sanford’s growing research activities. He replaces Ben Perryman, PhD, who recently retired after leading Sanford Research for the last decade.
“Dr. Hoyme’s training, skills, experience and most of all, passion, create an extraordinary platform for the next era of discovery at Sanford Research and its focus on genomics,” says Dave Link, Sanford Health senior executive vice president.
Hoyme’s background includes educator, administrator, physician and researcher. He returned to South Dakota in 2007 and has since served as chief medical officer of Sanford Children’s Hospital, senior vice president for Children’s Services, and professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. Prior to 2007, Dr. Hoyme served as professor and chief of the Division of Medical Genetics and associate chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA.
Dr. Hoyme has also held numerous leadership roles within regional and national clinical and research organizations in pediatrics and medical genetics. His research focuses on the delineation of genetic and malformation syndromes, with a specific emphasis on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. He has led fetal alcohol syndrome research studies in South Africa for the past 15 years and helped establish the prevalence rate of fetal alcohol syndrome in South Africa, which remains the highest documented rate in the world. In addition, Dr. Hoyme has authored more than 300 original articles, monographs, book chapters and research abstracts.
“As a physician-scientist, Dr. Hoyme’s background will be vital in further elevating the organization’s focus on translational and clinical research activities,” says Link.
According to Link, continuing to expand and grow educational partnerships will be an important priority toward growing a bioscience economy in the Midwest as well as workforce development. He adds, “Because of his strong leadership background, Dr. Hoyme will be key in creating innovative approaches for continued progress and momentum with educational partners across our regions.”
Dr. Hoyme will share time between his new and current roles until a replacement is found.
