Sanford Doctor Honored for Pediatric Education

Sanford Children's Hospital's chief pediatric medical officer has been presented with a national award by the Western Society for Pediatric Research.

(Sioux Falls, SD) – Sanford Children’s Hospital’s chief pediatric medical officer has been presented with a national award by the Western Society for Pediatric Research.

H. Eugene Hoyme, MD, was recently honored with the Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr., Education Award at the society’s annual meeting in Carmel, Calif. Dr. Hoyme, who has served as chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota since 2007, was nominated for the award by his previous trainees at Stanford and the University of Arizona.

Dr. Hoyme has been recognized by his peers as having a strong and sustained commitment to clinical practice, research and teaching. He is nationally known as an authority on clinical genetics and fetal alcohol syndrome, both publishing and reviewing articles for leading medical journals. He previously also served as the Director of the Stanford/University of California, San Francisco Medical Genetics Residency Program, during which time he trained more than 20 postdoctoral fellows in pediatric genetics.

The prestigious St. Geme award is given out every other year to honor the memory of Dr. Joseph St. Geme, a national leader in pediatric care, education and research. It is granted by the Western Society for Pediatric Research, an organization made up of scientists actively engaged in clinical or laboratory investigations in academic departments of pediatrics throughout the western United States.

In his work at Sanford, Hoyme has served as an educator and mentor and has overseen the establishment of a new accredited pediatric residency program and the opening of the Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Prior to joining Sanford Health, Dr. Hoyme served as Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Medical Genetics at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. The Dell Rapids native earned his medical degree from University of Chicago. He completed his residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in clinical genetics and dysmorphology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.
