I wanted to share with you the outstanding experience my family and I had at Sanford Health. My father, Alvin Schroeder, was a patient of yours. Having developed chest pain while at home, he was admitted to Sanford and found to have coronary disease requiring a three vessel coronary artery bypass graft just before Christmas. Needless to say, I hopped on the next plane to Sioux Falls.
Our experience was nothing short of exceptional. He received amazing care from everyone in your facility. He progressed remarkably well, and had it not been for the snowstorm, could have been discharged to home 72 hours after open heart surgery! The attention he received, we all received, was nothing short of a marvel. While the entire staff that cared for him was always courteous and professional, there are two individuals that stand out as role models for delivery care; Dr. Verlyn Nykamp with Sanford Heart Hospital and the surgical ICU nurse, Ben (my apologies for not getting his last name). At every step, these two gentlemen sought us out to keep us posted on Dad’s progress.
I’ve been in health care for my entire career as a former EMT, a critical care nurse in a large university, as a nurse administrator in a community hospital and now as a physician and medical director for a group of hospitals at the sixth largest medical center in Michigan. So, I’ve seen my share of healthcare settings. I must tell you, I came away from this experience energized, recognizing that exceptional healthcare can be the rule and not just the exception, as evidenced by our experience. The entire Sanford organization should be recognized and congratulated! Keep up the great work!
