If you have a favorite food and also get frequent headaches, the two may be connected.
Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of really good evidence that relates specific foods to bad headaches, even migraines. But there are some potential triggers, which differ for everyone.
Making sure you don't skip meals and staying well hydrated will certainly help prevent the pain. But Sanford Health Dietitian Teresa Beach also says nitrates in foods like processed meats, additives like food coloring or artificial sweetener can trigger a headache.
"The best thing to do is keep a headache journal. On those days that you get a migraine, try to think of every single thing that you ate so maybe you can correlate it and find out if there's, you know, 'Yeah, on these three days I had this specific thing,'" Beach said.
Beach says a hard aged cheese could also be a trigger. So staying away from blue cheeses, brie, feta, even swiss and cheddar could help prevent a headache.
