(Sioux Falls, SD) – As the desperate need for help and support for the people of Haiti continues, Sanford Health & MeritCare continues to look for ways to contribute. This morning, a team of physicians and support staff left Sioux Falls and headed to the area to aid in relief efforts.
“While the recovery from this disaster will take years, we have coordinated a medical and supply relief operation beyond the monetary donation already contributed through the American Red Cross to help with immediate medical needs,” said Charles P. O’Brien, MD, President, Sanford USD Medical Center.
“This particular relief effort will not be a ‘mission’ effort but rather in the form of a structured military style operation because of safety issues, infrastructure damage and the complexity of support needed.”
In the next days, a team of Sanford Health & MeritCare physicians and staff who are organizing themselves like a military style operation to bring needed medical services and supplies will deploy to the Haiti area.
The Sanford Health & MeritCare team will partner with Children Of The Nations International (COTNI), a reputable organization in the Haiti area with a facility and assets to help set up operations and assist with immediate medical attention.
“We believe this is the best hope of starting a continuous process for additional medical care in the Haiti area,” added Dr. O’Brien.
Sanford Health & MeritCare has also established a “Haiti Relief Fund” through the Foundation. Contributions can be made at either the Sanford Health Foundation or MeritCare Foundation, write “Haiti Medical Relief Effort” on the memo line.
