New Orthopedic Operating Suites Increase Patient Access

Bad knee? Sore shoulder? These are just a few of the problems repaired inside new orthopedic operating suites at Sanford USD Medical Center.

“Whether it is repairing a torn rotator cuff in the shoulder of an athlete after a fall or performing a hand or foot surgery on an older adult, the dedicated outpatient orthopedic surgical suites may be appropriate for the busy lives that we all lead,” said Robert Van Demark, Jr., MD, Sanford Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

Medical advances mean same-day or outpatient surgery is available for many people who would have, in the past, needed to be hospitalized.

“More orthopedic procedures are being performed on an outpatient basis,” said Kevin Lampe, Vice President, Sanford USD Medical Center. “These procedures can now be performed in dedicated orthopedic surgical suites at Sanford Orthopedic Surgical Services. These suites increase patient access and are designed for people who are time-conscious and appreciate personal care.”

Outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine procedures performed at Sanford Orthopedic Surgical Services include:

  • Arthroscopies of the knee, shoulder, wrist, elbow and ankle.
  • Shoulder repairs including rotator cuff and labrum repairs.
  • ACL and other knee ligament repairs.
  • Hand, wrist and elbow surgery including small bone arthroplasty, fusions, tendon, ligament and nerve repairs.
  • Foot and ankle surgery including bunion surgery, small bone arthroplasty, fusions, tendon, ligament and nerve repairs

“The growth of outpatient procedure has been made possible by improvements in surgical techniques, including minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures that require smaller incisions, spare muscle and result in less blood loss and trauma to patients, as well as better medications to control pain,” added Van Demark. “Patients love it because they are able to recover in their own surroundings, where they are most comfortable, and it is medically safe.”

In addition to dedicated physicians with Sanford Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, the operating staff specializes in the surgical care of orthopedic patients only. The one-on-one nursing care provided has proven to decrease recovery time, and the shortened stay means less time away from day-to-day activities.
