Dear Sanford Family,
Since winter gave way to spring, we have been in serious discussions with our friends and colleagues in Fargo, ND about the potential of our two organizations, MeritCare and Sanford, joining forces to create a new health system. Our Trustees, key management and advisors have worked very hard and over long hours and nights to make our decisions beneficial to all involved. We’ve grown immensely over the last decade, and yet we sit as strong and well situated as ever. Every step has always come down to the simple decision based on what is best for our patients, our employees and our community.
MeritCare and Sanford have approved a “Letter of Intent” to combine our organizations and create an even stronger and more dynamic health system. We’ve agreed to the name, “Sanford-MeritCare.” We look forward to growing on the reputations of each organization by expanding in each community based on the strengths of one another. An example would be to build and expand in pediatrics in Fargo based on the reputation of Sanford Children’s in Sioux Falls. Another example would be to build and expand in our Cancer Center in Sioux Falls based on the reputation of the impressive Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo. These are just two of many, many examples of the growth we anticipate. Again, career opportunities and stability have been outgrowths of our willingness to stretch to new horizons and build relationships by giving and receiving as we go. You can only imagine the possibilities of bringing North Dakota’s and South Dakota’s most visible and successful health systems together. We will need to finalize our work into an official agreement.
I look forward to the discussion we need to have with you and the ideas we will gather from the physicians who have defined our standards and all of you who make Sanford the wonderful experience it is.
