A Sweet Success - Celebrating Ten Years of Caring
At 2:30 p.m., cupcakes will be given out to students, faculty and MeritCare volunteers to celebrate the ten year anniversary. Dr. Roger Gilbertson, President and CEO of MeritCare, will also be in attendance.
"Over the last ten years our program has really grown. We have mentored over 145 students and now have over 50 MeritCare staff who help with the program," said Susie Munyer, MeritCare community youth coordinator. "This is a time to celebrate the students' achievements and our great partnership."
In 1999, MeritCare became the first corporation in Fargo-Moorhead to adopt a school. Since that time, nearly all of the schools in the Fargo Public School District have been adopted by business partners through the efforts of the Fargo Public School Development Foundation. The decision to adopt Roosevelt, now Horace Mann Roosevelt Elementary, was based on America's Promise. It encourages MeritCare employees to become directly involved with their community and give back in a very important and tangible way – by volunteering their time and talents to help kids stay healthy. Current partnership activities include mentoring, classroom reading, safety and wellness education, career exploration and summer art enrichment. The program is coordinated by MeritCare's Community Connections department.
